Bankruptcy cannot be used to get out of paying child support or alimony, to discharge a debt that was incurred through fraud, or to avoid a debt resulting from a criminal act. It cannot be used by businesses, and it cannot be used by individuals who have had a previous bankruptcy discharged within the past eight years. Finally, an individual may only file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy once every six years.
